Real Madrid already feel they have players who can fill the void Raphael Varane’s departure would bring, according to reports. Manchester United are in talks to sign Varane just days after agreeing a deal to sign England star Jadon Sancho. Real have also lost another central defender in club captain Sergio Ramos, who left at the end of his contract.

Real have signed David Alaba on a free transfer from Bayern Munich.

The Austrian played the majority of last season at centre-back and is likely to be needed in that position under Carlo Ancelotti.

Eder Militao and Nacho Fernandez are two other regular defensive fixtures in the Real squad.

Jesus Vallejo, who had a spell to forget at Wolves two seasons ago, has returned from a loan at Granada.

Spanish outlet Marca claims Vallejo could well be the fourth-choice centre-back at Real for the upcoming season.

Mario Gila could be the fifth, with Victor Chust, 21, likely to go out on loan.

Marca says Real may not sign a direct replacement for Varane and use what they already have.

The report claims United have been given permission to speak to the France international, with a fee expected to be in the region of £42.9million (€50m).

Varane has turned down Real’s offers of a new contract, with his current deal set to expire in less than 12 months’ time.

So Real have given the player’s agent the green light to thrash out a move to United.

The arrival of Varane would take United’s spending this summer to well over £100m, with Sancho set to cost an initial £73m.

However, former Tottenham goalkeeper Kasey Keller still believes the Red Devils need to sign a striker on top of Sancho and Varane to have a genuine chance at winning the Premier League next season.

Asked if United can win the title with Sancho and Varane, Keller told ESPN FC: “I’m not sure. I’m not sure if [Edinson] Cavani can score the goals they need.

“He’s done great coming in but I still see him probably in his situation being that secondary striker to play, come off the bench.

“Obviously there was talk potentially of a Harry Kane or something like that, or even doing a double deal with Sancho to bring in Erling Haaland as well. I could see that more.”
