Barcelona star signs new contract with club that has mega £428m release clause

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has committed his future to the club in a long-term deal until 2028, with a monster release clause inserted into his contract.

Ter Stegen, 31, joined Barcelona in 2014 for a bargain £9.7million from Borussia Monchengladbach and has racked up 379 games and counting for the Blaugrana – the fourth-highest at the club by a goalkeeper.

The 34-time Germany international’s importance to Barca couldn’t be clearer following his new long-term deal that includes an unmatchable £428m release clause.

Ter Stegen was promoted to vice-captain this summer but according to reports, he’s had to make a huge sacrifice in order to pen his new terms.

The German’s previous deal was set to expire in 2025 but according to reports in Spain from Jiantes, Ter Stegen has accepted a wage reduction in order to extend his contract.

It’s said that Ter Stegen has deferred the remaining two years of his previous contract and 30% of his new salary will be reduced in the next three years of the deal.

Barcelona’s financial issues have plagued the club over the last few years and were to blame for Lionel Messi’s departure after they were unable to register him due to a salary cap.

The La Liga giants will have to act quickly on the futures of Sergi Roberto, Marcos Alonso, Alejandro Balde and the club’s youngest ever player, Lamine Yamal, who are all in the final year of their contract.

Such is Balde’s and Yamal’s first-team potential, it would be a priority for Barca to extend their stays, whilst Roberto became club captain after Sergio Busquets left to join Messi at Inter Miami.

But Alonso’s future remains uncertain after he was not registered in the first-team squad due to the Barcelona’s financial woes.

Those FFP concerns have also stalled Joao Cancelo’s proposed loan move from Manchester City, but Ter Stegen’s wage cut should help the club either push Cancelo’s deal through or register backup goalkeeper Inaki Pena.
