Rashford sent ‘Gordon warning’ as Man Utd star’s hopes hang in the balance

Ten Hag bemoans Man Utd’s lack of control at Galatasaray

Ex-Newcastle star Nobby Solano has warned Marcus Rashford that his spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad is not guaranteed due to the good form of Anthony Gordon. The Magpies winger has made an electric start to the season, scoring five and assisting three in 12 Premier League appearances so far this season.

Rashford has struggled in all competitions this season, prompting conversations at Old Trafford about what is required to truly get the very best out of the academy graduate. Despite remaining a stalwart in Erik ten Hag’s side, the 26-year-old has failed to repay the faith of his manager and his two league goals highlight further that he is like a shadow of the electric forward from last season.

Despite his poor form, Rashford remains a key player in Gareth Southgate’s side on the international stage, featuring in all of their last four matches. Though competition is rising for his spot in the Three Lions squad.

Gordon is among the players battling to break into Southgate’s plans, and ex-Magpies hero Solano believes that the 22-year-old has every right to feel capable of being part of the England squad. Speaking exclusively to Express Sport with Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I and TNT Sports, the former midfielder said: “I believe he (Gordon) would have his opportunity.

“Southgate is watching the matches every weekend, he will recognise him straight away. If you ask me ‘him or Rashford’ with how he is performing, how he is scoring, to me, he’s in a great moment.

“The rationale for me is in moments, Southgate has to pick the best players in the best moments so I believe Gordon, if he continues like this, he will have his opportunity.”

Gordon can play on both wings and through the middle as a No 10, and his versatility has proved incredibly useful for Eddie Howe in the heart of Newcastle’s injury crisis. As a result, the ex-Everton star can provide just as much cover in the England squad as Rashford, which will certainly be considered when the Euros is within touching distance.

“I’m no Southgate but I will say, I have the experience of working in my national team and my boss always used to say ‘you have to pick the team on the moments of the players’,” Solano continued.

“But don’t forget, sometimes like (Harry) Maguire, he’s always been criticised for playing for Manchester United but playing very well for England. Some players are suited to going to the national team, that’s the confidence from Southgate and people responding to him better. But at the moment, for Manchester United, Rashford is struggling. For me, he’s still a great player but who is better at the moment, I would say Gordon.”
