Rapids’ Moïse Bombito out with MCL injury; Michael Edwards recalled

The Colorado Rapids will be out one promising center back for multiple weeks, but called in another Tuesday.

A Rapids official confirmed to The Post that Generation Adidas center back Moïse Bombito will miss “a few weeks at least” with an MCL injury in his knee, which he suffered last Thursday at training. The official did not provide a recovery timeline as the club is still assessing the injury.

Bombito, who was the No. 3 selection in the 2023 SuperDraft, made the match-day roster for the season-opener in Seattle on Feb. 26, but picked up an injury last Thursday and was escorted straight to the team’s facility for evaluation, per a source.

The Rapids (0-1-1, 1 point) announced Tuesday they had recalled 22-year-old center back Michael Edwards from a season-long loan with USL Championship side San Antonio FC. Edwards left for San Antonio on loan Feb. 24, where he was expected to earn minutes with the second-division side, but 11 days later, he’s back in Burgundy. In that timespan, Gustavo Vallecilla was sent on loan to Columbus Crew last Friday, and Bombito picked up his injury.

Edwards is a promising center back whose Homegrown Player rights were acquired from D.C. United in 2021. He was previously with Wolfsburg II in Germany. Since arriving in Colorado, he was part of Rapids 2’s inaugural squad, playing in 12 games. Later in the season, he was loaned to the Colorado Springs Switchbacks and was a central figure along the back line on a team that reached the Western Conference finals.

Edwards will be available for selection against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday at Pay Pal Park. Colorado kicks off in the Bay at 8:30 p.m. MST and the game will be available to watch on Apple TV.

Elsewhere on the injury chart, the team official confirmed Rapids captain Jack Price is still week-to-week with a back injury. Price has not played in either of the two league games thus far.
