Manchester United suffered a significant blow with Raphael Varane being forced off in the first half of their Champions League clash against Atalanta. The defender had to be replaced after sustaining an injury just four days before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men take on arch-rivals Manchester City.

Varane, who only returned from an injury, pulled up in the 38th minute with a problem when the score was 1-0 to Atalanta.

Solskjaer opted to tweak his formation and threw on attacker Mason Greenwood in his place.

The United boss will be concerned about the Frenchman with a crucial Manchester derby against Pep Guardiola’s City coming up this weekend.

The severity of Varane’s injury is not yet known, with the player set for tests over the coming hours to determine the full extent of his problem.

But the fact that Varane could no longer continue is not an encouraging sign.
