Rangnick demands more goals from Ronaldo and United attackers

Ralf Rangnick demands more goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and his other attackers after Manchester United scored just twice from 52 shots in their last two matches

  • Manchester United have endured a frustrating week in front of goal
  • They exited the FA Cup against Middlesbrough having after 30 shots on goal
  • A further 22 chances were created in the 1-1 draw at basement club Burnley
  • Ralf Rangnick wants his attackers to be more ruthless in goalscoring areas
  • Cristiano Ronaldo is now five games without a goal – worst run since 2010

Ralf Rangnick admits Cristiano Ronaldo needs to score more goals for Manchester United after hitting his worst barren run in club football for 12 years.

Although Ronaldo is United’s top scorer this season with 14 goals, he hasn’t scored in five games since he was last on target against Burnley at the end of December and was dropped to the bench against the same club in the 1-1 draw at Turf Moor on Tuesday.

The Portugal star, who turned 37 on Saturday, last went five games without a goal in club football at Real Madrid in 2010.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been challenged to score more goals by Manchester United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick

Rangnick conceded that Ronaldo has to do better but called on all of United’s forwards to chip in after United scored just three goals in the last games.

‘It’s not only about Cristiano Ronaldo. He should score more goals, it’s obvious,’ said United’s interim manager.

‘We are creating chances and opportunities in the last couple of games but just didn’t score enough goals.

‘It’s not just an issue with Cristiano, it’s an issue with other players, especially the offensive players that we don’t score enough goals if you bear in mind how many chances we create.

‘It needs to get better in the coming weeks. In the first half against Burnley, it was very close to the game plan we spoke before the game and now it’s about rewarding ourselves with the results we deserve.’
