Rangers have been urged to make a move for Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton, having been told that the backup stopper has been hurt by “promises broken” since he arrived at Old Trafford. The former Aston Villa man has made just one appearance since joining the Red Devils again in 2021, as a substitute for Dean Henderson in a Champions League tie with Young Boys.
Heaton, 36, has largely been an understudy to David De Gea and Martin Dubravka this season, but could feature more prominently in Scotland for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side as the Dutchman has split minutes between Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin this season. Former Tottenham stopper Paul Robinson believes that Heaton has “unfinished business” as a number one, and urged Rangers to move for the United goalkeeper.
“If they can get him out of Man United, Tom would be an excellent option,” Robinson told Football Insider. “Tom is somebody who has a lot of unfinished business. He got injured at Aston Villa and never won his place back because [Emiliano] Martinez came in.
“He has not been given a fair chance at Man United. I suspect promises have been made by previous managers and nothing has come to fruition. Tom is far better than being number three goalkeeper, no matter what club he is at. He is not at that stage of his career yet. He has so much to give.

“A move to a club like Rangers would be a very good move for him. It would be great for Rangers as well because he is a top-class goalkeeper. Tom is hungry. He would be a fantastic acquisition for any club.”
Despite rarely featuring on the pitch for United, Heaton does reportedly have a big role at the club. Alongside helping prepare De Gea for games, he is in Erik ten Hag’s four-man leadership group alongside Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and De Gea according to the Telegraph.
Heaton is vastly experienced with over 350 career appearances, including over 100 in the Premier League alongside three caps for England, and came through the United academy under Alex Ferguson, though he departed for Cardiff without making a first-team appearance.
Heaton’s contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season, meaning Rangers could sign him for free if they wait until the summer, though Ten Hag’s side does have the option to extend the goalkeeper’s current deal for a further year.
At the beginning of the month, Van Bronckhorst confirmed that McGregor would be his first-choice goalkeeper going forward. “Well I said before, we started the season with Jon and from now on Allan will continue in goal,” the Rangers boss told Sky Sports.
