Ralph Hasenhuttl is 'a serious contender for the vacant Everton job'

Ralph Hasenhuttl is ‘a serious contender to succeed Frank Lampard at Everton’ with the ex-Southampton boss being considered if a deal for Farhad Moshiri’s No 1 target Marcelo Bielsa should prove too difficult

  • Ralph Hasenhuttl has been out of work since his sacking from Southampton
  • He spent four years at St. Mary’s during which time he was twice beaten 9-0

Ralph Hasenhuttl has emerged as a contender to take over the vacant Everton manager job according to reports.

The former Southampton boss is thought to be a serious contender for the position at Goodison Park according to Sky Sports, although ex-Leeds coach Marcelo Bielsa is still believed to be the ‘No 1 choice’ of owner Farhad Moshiri.

Frank Lampard was sacked as Everton boss on Monday, with the club stuck in the relegation zone, and the club already held talks with Bielsa over taking over, although it would appear there is still a chance for the Austrian.

Sky Sports reported on Tuesday that Hasenhuttl was in the running to become the new Toffees boss, after Bielsa had been already linked to the position.

Lampard’s sacking came with the club stuck in 19th spot in the Premier League following successive losses to relegation rivals Southampton and West Ham.

Hasenhuttl’s experience of the English top-flight is thought to be a factor in his favour, having led the Saints for three years and 11 months.

The Austrian drew praise at times for his work at Southampton, and even had his side at the top of the Premier League table by November 2021, after an 11th place finish in 2020-21.

However the former RB Leipzig coach was on the wrong side of two separate 9-0 defeats during his time on the south coast, and was removed from his position in November 2022 following a 4-1 loss to Newcastle.

The hierarchy at Everton has been criticised at length this season after another campaign that has fallen far short of what many would expect for one of the country’s oldest clubs.

Farhad Moshiri would prefer to install the Argentinian to the vacant managerial post

Jamie Carragher went as far as to suggest that they are the ‘worst run club in the country’, although he did agree that Lampard’s sacking was the right decision.

The Toffees’ recruitment policy has also drawn fire, and although they at last seemed set to make a move in the January window, their target Arnaut Danjuma seems to now be on his way to Tottenham instead.

The club may also be on the verge of losing Anthony Gordon to Newcastle, although they are thought to be holding out for £60million for a player that showed plenty of promise earlier in the season but struggled for minutes under Lampard.
