Ralf Rangnick "annoyed" with Man Utd stars who didn’t follow instructions

Ralf Rangnick revealed that his players ignored his instructions during Manchester United's 1-1 draw against Young Boys in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The newly appointed interim boss made a number of changes to the line-up given that qualification for the last 16 – and top spot in the group – were already guaranteed.

Rare starts were handed to the likes of Donny van de Beek, Jesse Lingard, Dean Henderson and Juan Mata while Rangnick also opted for a bench full of academy players.

Mason Greenwood put United one up with an acrobatic finish after just nine minutes before Young Boys equalised through Fabian Rieder after van de Beek gave the ball sloppily on the edge of the penalty area.

The Red Devils pushed for a winner but in the end were held by the Swiss minnows under the lights at Old Trafford.

"What was really a little bit annoying was the way that we also gave the goal away, because we played too many balls into the first line of their pressing area," Rangnick told BT Sport after the game.

"And this was also the case with the goal that we conceded. We could have cleared the ball easily and whenever we played the ball into the second or third line, we were always dangerous."

The German said he warned his players not to attempt anything too intricate while playing out from the back, but the message didn't get through.

"I told them that before the game but they still played in that situation the ball a five-metre pass and [Young Boys] were just waiting for that ball. It was more or less a pressing invitation that we sent," he added.

After handing debuts to three players – including 35-year-old goalkeeper Tom Heaton – Rangnick acknowledged that it wasn't always going to be straightforward.

"There were quite a few debuts and game time for players who desperately need game time. I wouldn’t say I was happy but it was okay," he said.
