Everton are reportedly edging closer to announcing Rafael Benitez as their new manager, according to reports. Everton were left stunned earlier this summer when Ancelotti quit his post to take over at Real Madrid.

A host of names were immediately linked with the vacant post at Goodison Park.

And Nuno Espirito Santo had seemingly emerged as the top target after the Portuguese coach left Wolves at the end of the last season.

Reports had suggested that Nuno would even be announced as Everton’s next manager this week.

But talkSPORT now report that Benitez looks set to be named the new manager for the Toffees.

The former Liverpool boss currently lives on Merseyside and admitted back in May that he was keen for a return to management in the Premier League.

Benitez was an unpopular figure among Everton fans from his time at Liverpool after labeling them a “small club” following a 0-0 draw in 2007.

The Spanish coach apologised for his remark years later, explaining that he mixed up his words.

“I made a mistake when I said it was a small club,” he said.

“What I wanted to say was they are a small team because in this game I remember they had one chance.

“Liverpool fans they were happy and the Evertonians were upset. But I didn’t want to say they were a small club I wanted to say they were a small team.”

Despite Benitez’s loyalty to Liverpool, Jamie Carragher gave his endorsement for Everton to bring in the former Anfield coach.

“As Carlo Ancelotti returns to Real Madrid, Everton owner Farhad Moshiri will be wondering when he will next get the chance to appoint a former Real Madrid manager and Champions League winner with Premier League experience,” Carragher said last month.

“How about immediately?

“Of the names instantly linked with Everton as the Ancelotti news broke, who is more qualified than my former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez?

“Rafa is available, settled in the area and I am sure he is ready if Moshiri is prepared to consider one of the more shocking managerial appointments in Merseyside football history.

“At the very least, Benitez should be under consideration as Moshiri begins yet another managerial quest. And not for the first time, before the owner decides the right candidate, he has to be clear of the football direction he wants to take.”
