PSG’s Sergio Rico in intensive care with serious injury after falling off horse

Paris Saint-German goalkeeper Sergio Rico is intensive care in hospital after suffering a serious head injury during a riding accident in his native Spain. The 29-year-old was rushed to hospital in Seville for urgent medical attention after Spanish media reports claimed that he had been involved in an incident with a horse, with PSG confirming their player had been placed in intensive care due to the serious nature of his injury.

Rico was reported to have been riding a horse near the Spanish town of Huelva when a horse, which was unattended, collided with him. It was then reported in the Spanish media the Spain international was taken to a hospital near Seville by helicopter and has suffered a head trauma.

His club PSG have since revealed that he is in the ICU unit after suffering a serious head injury after releasing a club statement.

It read: “Paris Saint-Germain learned of the accident of their player Sergio Rico this Sunday and remain in constant contact with those close to them. The entire Rouge et Bleu community gives them their full support.”

Rico previously played in the Premier League during a brief stint with Fulham on loan in the 2018-19 season before returning to his parent club Sevilla. Upon hearing the news, his former club tweeted an image of the former Cottagers loanee with the message: “We’re all with you, @sergiorico25.”

Another one of his previous clubs Sevilla paid tribute to Rico with a message of support for the stricken Spanish stopper.

“Lots of strength and speedy recovery, Sergio Rico,” the La Liga club tweeted via their official account.

Rico started his career at his boyhood club Sevilla and came through the club’s academy before graduating to the first team in 2014.

He went on to play 170 times for Sevilla before signing for Fulham on a season-long loan in 2018 and he went on to play 32 times for the west London club.

Unfortunately, the club’s relegation to the Championship ended any hopes of a permanent stay and he signed for PSG as backup to Keylor Navas.

Rico has predominantly been used as a backup option and is yet to make a single appearance this season, having returned from a loan spell with Real Mallorca last term. The Spaniard was given permission to travel back to his home country and missed the 1-1 draw with Strasbourg.
