Pro footballer alleged to have placed 312 bets on matches charged by the FA

Football League defender Mitch Clark has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of The FA's Betting Rules.

Clark, 24, of Accrington Stanley has been given a week to respond to the charges. He and his Accrington team-mates were relegated from League One on the final day of the season.

The regulation and discipline update reads: "Accrington Stanley FC's Mitch Clark has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of The FA's Betting Rules.

"It's alleged that the defender breached FA Rule E1(b) in respect of 312 bets placed on football matches between 08 February 2022 and 10 March 2023.

"Mitch Clark has until 17 May 2023 to provide his response."

The FA's 2022/23 handbook states that participants shall not either directly or indirectly bet on results, progress or conduct of a match or competition as well as transfers, signings, sackings and team selections.

Their worldwide ban on betting on football relates to players in the Premier League all the way down to the third-step of the non-league pyramid.

Clark, who played 49 times across all competitions across 2022/23, joined The 'Owd Reds in 2021 following three year at Leicester City.

During that spell he failed to make an appearance and was twice loaned out to Port Vale, having come through the Aston Villa academy and making one senior appearance.

It was reported back in March that Premier League striker Ivan Toney could be banned for up to six months after admitting a string of betting charges.

The charges levelled against the Brentford forward initially consisted of 232 alleged breaches of the FA rules between 2017 and 2021.

The governing body later adding a further 30 charges that took place in a two year period between 2017 and 2019.
