Premier League clubs and broadcasters united over ending pitchside interviews

Premier League clubs and broadcasters both want to see a change in how post-match interviews are currently conducted with managers after abuse was aimed at Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

The interviews have taken place pitch-side in a bid to limit those in the corridors to help stop the spread of germs, but have had a series of problems since the return of fans.

With players struggling to hear reporters and their responses drowned out to those watching at home, it looks as though a change of plan is needed going forwards.

More worryingly, there have been safety fears for both players and managers with rival supporters still in the ground, with Santo facing abuse from Arsenal fans at the weekend.

The Sun report that clubs, TV channels and radio stations all want the interviews to return to the tunnel areas in future, as they were before the Premier League was paused back in 2020.

Hundreds of fans were yet to leave the Emirates when Spurs boss Nuno took to his media duties 15 minutes after his side suffered a 3-1 defeat in the north London derby.

He was met by chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning.”

Following that TV producers agreed to stop the interview, and he later returned after the supporters had been cleared from the stands by stewards.

They add that Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has even refused to do interviews at times this season due to safety fears, leading to the call for change.

There was said to be 18 broadcasters from across the world covering the fixture at the Emirates, which made the current situation a better fit with more room than inside the grounds.

The report adds that either BT Sport or Sky Sports could be allowed to do their reports in the tunnels from this weekend, but others may have to continue on the touch line.
