Manchester United players rallied around Paul Pogba after the France star opened up on his country's 'cruel' Euro 2020 exit.

The world champions are beginning their holidays early after suffering penalty shootout heartbreak against Switzerland on Monday.

Pogba looked to have fired France into the quarter-finals when he scored a screamer to give his side a 3-1 lead with just 15 minutes remaining – but the Swiss forced extra time with two late goals.

With the game eventually going to penalties, Kylian Mbappe saw his spot-kick saved by Yann Sommer – securing Switzerland a last-eight clash against Spain this Friday.

Pogba has now spoken out about the "sadness" of Les Bleus' defeat as he vowed Didier Deschamps' side would "come back stronger".

And he received support from England hero Luke Shaw as well as Kylian Mbappe team-mate Jesse Lingard.

Pogba shared a picture of his goal against Switzerland with his 45million Instagram followers, along with the caption: "Sometimes football can be cruel… cruel and also beautiful.

"Yesterday, the game brought us sadness but happiness to our opponents. That’s the beauty of football.

"Of course we all wished that we could have had a positive result.

"Thank you so much to all of our fans across the globe. It was beautiful to see you, to hear you, and to celebrate with you. You gave us hope and joy throughout all of our games. We will keep our heads up and we will come back stronger.

"Finally, I want to wish congratulations to Switzerland."

Pogba's post received well over a million likes – including one from Shaw, who set up Raheem Sterling's opener for England in their 2-0 win over Germany on Tuesday evening.

The left-back replied to Pogba, saying: "Keep your head up bro, you're the best", along with raised hands and heart emojis.

Lingard, who didn't make the England squad despite an impressive loan spell at West Ham, also described Pogba as "the best", while former United player Angel Gomes was another who lent his support with a 'like'.

Pogba's future continues to be the subject of speculation, with the 28-year-old not always able to replicate his France form at club level.

But the support from his United team-mates show he's a popular figure in the dressing room as he enters the final year of his contract at Old Trafford.
