Incoming Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino sees Mason Mount as a key player in his Blues revolution despite uncertainty over his future – with the midfielder entering the last 12 months of his deal at Stamford Bridge

  • The midfielder faces an uncertain future with 12 months left on his contract
  • Pochettino believes Mount will fit his system due to his ability and work ethic

Mauricio Pochettino believes Mason Mount can become a key player in his Chelsea revolution despite ongoing uncertainty over his long-term future.

Mount, who will miss the rest of the season after undergoing an abdomen operation, is entering the final 12 months of his current deal with no agreement over an extension close.

Chelsea – who are in line for a significant cash windfall if former player Marc Guehi leaves Crystal Palace this summer – may have no option but to consider offers for Mount this summer to avoid the prospect of losing the England international on a free transfer, with Liverpool and Arsenal among the clubs interested.

However, Pochettino, who is expected to become the next Chelsea head coach, has identified the 24-year-old as a someone who can play an integral role in his team next season.

The Argentine is a big admirer of Mount’s ability on the ball and work-ethic and feels the Blues academy graduate would suit the style he wants to implement.

The Argentine is expected to take over as the next Chelsea boss and is assessing his options

However, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea and Mount can find a contractual resolution in the coming weeks to ensure the midfielder stays at club in the long-term.

Nevertheless, Pochettino’s admiration for Mount throws the midfielder’s future into sharper focus ahead of what will be a pivotal summer for the Chelsea star.

Chelsea’s American ownership has spent £600million on new players since taking the reins from Roman Abramovich last year.

However in the midst of their huge transfer spree, Mount – widely recognised as one of the club’s most important players – has not had his contract renewed.

Co-controlling owner Todd Boehly met with Mount’s representatives in recent weeks raising hope a deal can reached. But as things stand there is no agreement in place.

The uncertainty over Mount’s future comes amid significant concerns from a number of his teammates about their futures at the club.

Edouard Mendy and N’Golo Kante are yet to sign new contracts while Mail Sport has learned that other members of the squad have sought urgent clarification with regards to the club’s plans for next season amid concerns their careers are stagnating at Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, it can be revealed that Chelsea will net millions in extra revenue if Guehi departs Palace this summer.

It is understood the previous Chelsea regime secured a 20 per cent sell-on clause as part of the deal that saw the England defender leave Stamford Bridge for Selhurst Park in 2021.

Guehi is attracting interest from a number of Premier League sides ahead of the transfer window, with Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United among the teams monitoring his situation.

It is understood will demand a minimum £50million for Guehi.
