Pique’s relationship with Barcelona hierarchy was ‘in tatters’ before retirement

Gerard Pique’s relationship had completely broken down with the Barcelona hierarchy before he decided to hang up his boots, according to reports.

The central defender called time on an astonishing career which saw him win the World Cup, the European Championships, four Champions League titles, eight La Liga titles, and seven Spanish Cups. Incredibly, Pique’s career did not have the best ending, as he was sent off at half-time for arguing with the referee during Xavi’s side’s 2-1 away victory over Osasuna.

Pique rejoined the Catalans from Manchester United in the summer of 2008 and has spent the last 14 years at the Nou Camp. However, his relationship with the club hierarchy was reportedly beyond repair before he made the decision to end his footballing career.

According to Spanish journalist Sique Rodriguez, Pique’s understanding with Barcelona club president Joan Laporta was completely broken. It is understood Pique has been seething ever since Laporta seemingly hinted towards the Spaniard, when he spoke about players unwilling to take pay cuts to help the club.

Laporta reportedly wanted to send Pique off into retirement with a joint press-conference, but the central defender declined the offer. Moreover, the report also claims Pique felt club director Mateu Alemany was a liar, and former teammate and current boss Xavi has been ‘insensitive’ of his struggles this season.

While it appears all parties are to separate on bad terms, Pique still delivered a very emotional speech to wave goodbye to the Barcelona fans.“Good evening to everyone, firstly before I leave you and say my thank-you, I’d like to thank my teammates, and all the staff, from the physios, the doctors, everyone in the gym, everyone who takes care of us, all of those who help us day in, day out to make things easier,” Pique said during his emotional speech.

“Thanks to the board for all of these years. In life when you get old, there are things where loving them is difficult when you have to leave them, or let them go. It’s been a relationship of a lot of love and passion to play for Barca.

“I think this was the time to give us some space to one another. I think it was time to part ways and I’m convinced that in the future I will come back here. This isn’t a goodbye.

“I left when I was 17 because I thought we needed a break and I had to grow. I’d like to say to you, most of you know that I was made a club member the day I was born, I was born here and I will die here.’
