Piers Morgan raises Ronaldo to Arsenal theory as Gunners told to sign five stars

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reviews the Brighton game

Arsenal supporter Piers Morgan has urged the Gunners to spend heavily in the upcoming transfer market after suffering a catastrophic blow to their title hopes following a recent defeat to Brighton. Defeat at the Emirates left Mikel Arteta’s outfit four points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City, who only need one victory from their three remaining games to be crowned champions.

Morgan was at the game to watch goals from Julio Encisco, Deniz Undav and Pervis Estupinan sink Arsenal’s chances of beating City to the title and has since outlined his “shopping list” for the summer in order for the Gunners to compete on all fronts. Plans will already be underway between sporting director Edu and Arteta, as midfield especially appears to be a priority.

Arsenal have strongly been linked with Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo, two players that Morgan believe are necessary signings. He also shared a theory that if the Gunners had landed Cristiano Ronaldo after his contract was terminated by Manchester United, something the striker was open to, then they would have gone on to win the league.

“If Arsenal want to actually win major trophies next season, here is my shopping list.. and we need all of them: [Kim] Min-Jae, Caicedo, Rice, [Kaoru] Mitoma, [Victor] Osimhen or [Dusan] Vlahovic,” Morgan wrote on Twitter.

“Mock all you like, but if we’d signed Ronaldo when he left Utd, until the end of the season – as he was keen to do btw – we would have won the League. He knows how to win major trophies, and how to score goals when it really matters.”

Morgan was steadfast in his opinion that Arsenal “bottled” the title, however, after a disappointing run of games in recent weeks including a four-game winless run against Liverpool, West Ham, Southampton and then City. He told talkSPORT: “I don’t care what Arsenal fans are trying to say or excuse it saying we’re the youngest squad along with Southampton, who got relegated so why boast about having the youngest squad, or that we got tired playing one tournament when City were in everything. Really? Tiredness.

“I’ve heard all the excuses, but the truth is we bottled it. There’s no other way to describe what has happened in the last few weeks. We were eight points clear and eight points to go and we should have won the league.

“I will always believe that. This might be the best chance we get. A lot of teams are going to be strengthening and already are. Look at Liverpool improving by the minute.

“I think next season will be ferociously competitive and there will be seven or eight teams competing for that top four. This was our chance.”
