Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s major regret from nightmare season for Arsenal
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang admits to having major regrets about one of the worst seasons of his career.
But the Arsenal skipper is out to repay the club’s faith in him by firing them into the Europa League final against Villarreal tonight.
Aubameyang was dropped earlier this season for being late to a team meeting, missed games through compassionate leave, and then contracted malaria.
He said: “I regret some things season. I have to give something back to the club and to the fans. I want to lead in this game.
“It's been a really tough year because I've had some issues on and off the pitch. But I'm feeling confident for the end of the season. I’m hungry.
“Definitely in the past few years, this has been the most difficult but I think this is life sometimes. Maybe it's the start of the season for me. Hopefully.”
Aubameyang has only scored ten Premier League goals this season, and three in the Europa League, but is set to start tonight’s semi final despite being not 100% fit.
He said: “Everyone was expecting me to score more goals. I know it. Maybe I feel a bit responsible that we are in this situation right now.
“But we have this opportunity to change it with this game and hopefully go to the final and win it. This is our main target.”
Arsenal are also sweating on the fitness of Kieran Tierney and Alexandre Lacazette, who look set to be among the substitutes.
Aubameyang, who is still recovering match fitness after a bout of malaria, played for 78 minutes, and scored, in Sunday’s win over Newcastle.
Arteta said: “He played well and he felt much better than the days before that. Obviously, scoring a goal is really important for him as well, so he's in a good place.”
