Phil Foden surprised by £50million Arsenal transfer target

England boast arguably their most talented squad in a generation, but one player has caught Phil Foden’s attention more than any other.

The Manchester City starlet played an integral role in his side’s near total domination of the Premier League last season and has taken to international football with apparent ease.

Gareth Southgate’s decision to add Brighton defender Ben White to his squad, however, raised several eyebrows. The 23-year-old was initially cut from the squad but was re-added following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s withdrawal due to injury.

White has subsequently been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal and a £50million deal looks likely to be struck with the Seagulls. Foden admits he had seen little of the versatile defender prior to him joining the senior England ranks, but he has been hugely impressed.

Asked by ITV which player had surprised him most, Foden said: ‘You know I really haven’t seen a lot of Ben and he came in and been brilliant in training, so I’d say Ben White.’

Foden started England’s first two group stage matches but was taken off just before the hours mark in the goalless draw against Scotland.

He was subsequently rested against Czech Republic to guard against the threat of a suspension, but the likes of Bukayo Saka and Jack Grealish impressed in his absence.

England are back in action against Germany at Wembley on Tuesday, and Foden is desperate to regain his place and help his country reach the latter stages.

He said: ‘I’m hoping, come the Germany game, we can just express ourselves. With the attackers we’ve got we can really hurt them, so hopefully we turn up. We’re as good as anyone on our day.

‘Obviously, I wasn’t born when all of this rivalry was going on. We’re a new team now and we want to create our own history. You can’t think too much about what’s happened in the past. We’re just going to focus on the game and create our own future

‘Hopefully, I can get the opportunity to play again and show what I am about. I feel like I’ve still got so much more to show this tournament. Like I’ve done for my club, I’ve been scoring a lot of goals and I just want to continue that form into the national team.

‘And I believe that, hopefully in the next game, I can start getting involved in the goals.’
