Refereeing body PGMOL have introduced drones into their training of match officials ahead of the new Premier League season.

The innovative sessions at their camps involve referees and assistant referees overseeing practice matches before then analysing their movements from a bird’s eye view captured by DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise and DJI M30 drones.

With Adam Carter, head of performance analysis at the PGMOL, it allows referees to work on refining their positioning during key moments of matches. Assistants can also look at how to improve their line of sight for incidents such as offsides.

Referee Craig Pawson will oversee the Premier League opener between Burnley and Manchester City at Turf Moor, assisted by Simon Bennett and Steve Meredith. All officials have been at Loughborough for a pre-season training camp ahead of the big kick-off.

PGMOL chief Howard Webb has been striving to improve refereeing since taking charge in his role last season and that has led to more investment in their coaching of officials than ever before.

Carter said: ‘The use of technology in sport is constantly evolving and we are committed to ensuring we remain at the cutting edge of innovation.

‘The introduction of drones into our training programme has meant that we can now capture game scenarios from a new and beneficial viewpoint, which is playing an important part in preparing our officials for their fixtures both at home and across the world.’

The sessions are available via the PGMOL’s partnership with drone provider Coptrz, whose business development director George Burne said: ‘We look forward to working with the PGMOL to provide referees and assistant referees in football with even greater analysis within their regular training scenarios.’
