Pereira's Copa Libertadores error 'puts £17m United exit in jeopardy'

Andreas Pereira’s costly Copa Libertadores error for Flamengo ‘leaves his £17m Manchester United exit in jeopardy… with the Brazilian side now wanting a lower fee’ to sign the midfielder on permanent terms

  • Andreas Pereira lost possession for the decisive Copa Libertadores final goal
  • It meant that his Flamengo side were defeated 2-1 by rivals Palmeiras
  • Flamengo have an option to sign Pereira for £17m from Manchester United

Manchester United could be left counting the cost of Andrea Pereira’s costly mistake for Flamengo in the Copa Libertadores final against Palmeiras.

With the scores locked at 1-1 last Saturday, Pereira was caught in possession in his own half and Pameiras striker Deyverson capitalised to score the winner in the South American football’s biggest club game.

It could hinder United with Flamengo having an option to turn the midfielder’s loan move permanent with a £17m fee. Such a costly mistake could put his future at the Brazilian side in doubt with reports that they are now looking to talk to United about lowering the cost.

In credit to Pereira, he fronted up in the aftermath.

‘You can count on me, I’ll stay here until we win the next one,’ he told Flamengo fan group Rubro Negra.

The club president, Anderson Macula, also offered his support to the United loannee.

‘Raise your head, brother, don’t be shaken,’ Macula said. ‘You have quality, you have potential.

‘You are in the biggest club in the world, which is Flamengo. And next year we’ll win it.’

Despite the president’s kind words, it remains to be seen whether United will land such a windfall from Periera.

Sport Witness claim reports in Brazil suggest they will try and renegotiate the fee to sign the 25-year-old.

Either way, it appears his United future is all but over. Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has already identified £33m-rated midfielder Amadou Haidara at Red Bull Leipzig as a January target.
