Pele’s daughters Kely and Flavia Nascimento have squashed reports that the Brazilian football legend has been placed in ‘palliative care’. The 82-year-old was admitted into Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital on Tuesday after aggravating a respiratory infection by catching Covid.
Reports last week claimed Pele was no longer responding to chemotherapy to treat his bowel cancer and was taken to the ICU. But his daughters have debunked speculation over his health, stating the three-time World Cup winner ‘isn’t ready to say goodbye’ and will leave the hospital once he’s recovered from his respiratory infection.
Kely told Fantastico: “About three weeks ago, he got Covid. He is vaccinated, with all the vaccines, but because of the cancer medicine and the chemotherapy, which is fragile, he got a lung infection. That’s why he went to the hospital, because of the lung infection. Is he serious? It’s serious because he’s a certain age. He’s treating cancer.”
On Saturday, a day before Kely and Flavia were interviewed, the Albert Einstein Hospital confirmed Pele was responding well to treatment. And while insisting the hospital is currently the best place for him, Flavia has blasted suggestions that he is in the ICU in a ‘terminal state’.

“At the hospital, he is better assisted. But he’s not in the ICU. He’s in a normal room. So he’s not at risk. As a person with more delicate health, it is better to be in the hospital. It is very unfair to start saying that he is in a terminal state, with palliative treatment,” Flavia added.
“It’s not that. Believe us. More than anyone else, we don’t want that moment to come. Of course, one day, it will happen, but it’s not now. You don’t need to be in that alarm anticipating a situation that doesn’t exist now.”
Kely also opened up on the challenges that have come with the high-profile nature of her father’s condition, especially amid mass reports she vehemently claims are false.
She explained: “People send me their condolences [on social media]. I say I’m going to put the phone down, and I’m not going to answer anyone. I just feel like I have to respond to people. Not to tell everything, but to say that it is not like that.
“We are not rushing there to say goodbye. We’re taking turns, he’s sick, he’s old, but he’s there because of a lung infection. He’s on antibiotics, and when he gets better, he’ll go home again. He’s not saying goodbye at the hospital.”
Pele’s grandson, Arthur, revealed how he had watched Brazil in the World Cup group stage and was worried about their creativity without Neymar. The icon, widely considered the greatest footballer of all time, should also be tuned in this evening when his beloved nation face South Korea in the round of 16.
