Paul Scholes tells Manchester United to settle for EIGHTH-place

Paul Scholes tells Manchester United to settle for an EIGHTH-place finish (and they’re only sixth now!) as he says they are ‘unrecognisable’, leaving him ‘saddened’, in another damning verdict from a club legend

  • Liverpool thrashed Manchester United 4-0 in the Premier League on Tuesday
  • Paul Scholes insists Manchester United should settle for an eighth place finish
  • The Red Devils currently sit sixth in the Premier League with five games left
  • Scholes also wants United to give Erik ten Hag time to succeed at Old Trafford

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has told his former club to settle for eighth in the Premier League and give potential new manager Erik ten Hag the time to rebuild – despite being sixth.

The Red Devils suffered another major blow in their push to finish in the Premier League’s top four with a heavy 4-0 defeat to leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side dominated from the off with Luis Diaz, Sadio Mane and a brace from Mohamed Salah sealing a comfortable victory.

The defeats means United now sit sixth in the league table with just five matches left this campaign – with both fourth and fifth place Tottenham and Arsenal having games in hand.

West Ham and Wolves are chasing behind in seventh and eighth as they head into the final stretch of the campaign – two and five points behind respectively.

His former club now look set to miss out on the Champions League, but remain in the hunt for the Europa League, although either way it seems like the club could be heading for a major summer overhaul.

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is set to be the first change at Old Trafford, as he edges closer to being appointed as the replacement for interim boss Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season.

Scholes, however, took to Instagram to urge his former side to forget about Europe in yet another damning verdict from the ex-midfielder and allow ten Hag the time to get United back on track.

The former midfielder also wants United to give Erik ten Hag the time he needs to rebuild

He posted to his followers: ‘Finish 8th and give this man the time he needs… saddened by what’s happening, unrecognisable football club.’

Scholes post came on the back on his comments on Premier League Productions that United were ‘disgusting to watch’ as they were thrashed by Liverpool for the second time this campaign.

At Old Trafford they suffered a 5-0 loss, meaning the Reds hold a 9-0 aggregate over United from both games this season.

He said: ‘I’ve lost a little bit of anger towards it (United’s poor season) now, I feel saddened, it’s not great to watch.

‘I’d like to see them give at least a little bit of effort, it looks like the last place they want to see.

‘They want their season over, they want it done, they want to move on, but unfortunately there’s no hiding place. You can’t come to Anfield and be like that.

‘Them fans have travelled a long way, it’s disgusting to watch. But that’s where the club are at the minute.

‘They’ve got to give a little bit of effort, just for them fans coming to the ground.’

The result is just the latest poor result in a frustrating season for the club that finished second in the Premier League last season.
