Paul Scholes labels Man Utd ace ‘a different player but it took some convincing’

Paul Scholes has labelled Manchester United ace Antony a 'different player' – but admits 'it took some convincing'.

Antony joined United last summer from Ajax along with club boss Erik ten Hag. But the jury's still out on the £86million signing amid an indifferent campaign at Old Trafford this season for the winger.

United legend Scholes was one of the skeptics unsure if Antony was the right fit for the Red Devils. However, the Brazilian's brilliant performance in United's 2-0 win over Everton in early April sparked a change in the attacker, according to Scholes.

And since then, Scholes is convinced that Antony's the real deal, although he still expects the odd moment of madness from the forward. When asked on BT Sport if Antony is meeting expectations, Scholes replied: "I think he is, yes. It took some convincing for me especially after the first part of the season but over the last two weeks since that Everton game at home he has become a different player.

"I felt he became a little bit predictable, always cutting inside on his left foot and he needed to add different dimensions to his game, and in the Everton game he did that. He started to run in behind Ben Godrey – he did it two or three times – he was clean through on goal but he didn’t quite get the goal.

"He started to beat people on the outside and now his confidence is there. He’s starting to look like the player that we all expected. Now look, he’s still going to do his silly stuff, I’m sure he is, but we don’t mind if he’s producing goals, great passes.

"He needs more of those goals, he needs to get himself in the box when the ball is on the other side. He will score a lot of goals for this team over the next couple of years."

Antony's scored 10 goals and provided four assists in 38 games across all competitions this season so far. Two of those strikes have been in the Europa League, and United will hope that he can contribute again on Thursday evening as they seek to reach the competition's semi-final by defeating Sevilla.
