Jude Bellingham’s brother on cusp of possible Premier League transfer

Jude Bellingham’s brother Jobe is closing in on a summer switch to Sunderland – meaning he could be playing Premier League football next season if the Black Cats are promoted via the Championship play-offs. The 17-year-old younger brother of the Borussia Dortmund sensation now looks set to follow in the footsteps of the England international midfielder by waving an emotional goodbye to his boyhood club.

The highly-rated teenager has enjoyed a stellar breakthrough campaign at St Andrews where he featured in 22 Championship matches for the Blues next season.

Now The Athletic are reporting that a transfer deal – that is set to be completed in the coming weeks – with Sunderland is now close.

Bellingham is understood to have travelled to The Stadium of Light on Saturday ahead of their play-off semi-final first-leg clash with Luton.

The England U18 international could yet be in the stands to watch the contest and he will be hoping for a positive result in his quest to play Premier League football next season.

It has previously been reported that a host of top-flight clubs including Liverpool have been tracking his development closely.

German reports also indicated that Borussia Dortmund were considering a sensational swoop for his services that would see him join his brother Jude at Signal Iduna Park.

But now Sunderland are the team in the ascendancy and a deal looks to be as good as done ahead of the summer transfer window which opens in June.

Bellingham made his Birmingham first-team debut in 2021 at the age of 16.

In doing so, he became the club’s second youngest debut behind before Jude, who made his first appearance at the age of 16 years, 38 days in August 2019.

Speaking at the start of the month, Birmingham frontman Troy Deeney claimed Jobe has bulked up by two stone as he backed the youngster to become ‘an absolute monster’ like his brother.

Deeney told Kammy & Ben’s Proper Football Podcast: “There’s a cluster of six or seven [currently playing for Birmingham] under the age of 22, Jobe being the youngest – he has just turned 17.

“He’s put on 10 kilos this year, he’s going to be an absolute monster just like his brother is.

“He is going to be unbelievably talented, you can’t deny that, but it is just going to take him a year or two longer than his brother. He’s in that shadow isn’t he? Wonderful kid, wonderful family.”

Sunderland are now showing huge ambition in their bid for promotion following their turbulent struggles since suffering relegation from the Premier League in 2017.

Manchester United youngster Amad has flourished on loan in the North East this season under Tony Mowbray and his red-hot form has made Sunderland an attractive destination for young players moving forward.

Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele was recently in the stands to watch Sunderland in action against Sheffield United as he is close friends with Black Cats owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus.
