Paul Merson’s brutal goodbye to Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi live on TV
Arsenal icon Paul Merson had a brutal parting message for Shkodran Mustafi, who is edging closer to Bundesliga basement side Schalke.
Mustafi is set to have his contract terminated by Arsenal in order to leave and return to Germany.
The centre-back isn’t in Mikel Arteta’s plans, and will be allowed to leave now rather than stay until the end of the season – when he would be leaving on a free anyway.
His move will allow Schalke to let Ozan Kabak leave for Liverpool on loan with an option to buy.
Schalke have struggled so far this season, having won just once in 19 games this season.
And Merson believes Mustafi won’t be able to change that, and was brutal in his assessment of the move.
Asked on Sky Sports News to give his verdict on the move, he didn’t hold back in his opinion.
Merson replied: “Yeah, and he’ll keep that record going at Schalke,” in reference to Schalke’s one win in 19.
Mikel Arteta and Edu’s late compromise in 20-minute chat leads to 'agreed deal'
Mustafi’s move to Schalke means the Bundesliga side will now give the green light for Kabak to complete his move to Liverpool.
The centre-back will join on loan with an option to make the move permanent.
And according to Sky Germany, Kabak has already agreed to personal terms and passed his medical, meaning both deals are close to completion.
"We have good news for all Liverpool fans from Germany,” said Sky Germany’s Max Bielefeld. “The deal is edging closer and we understand that he's passed his medical and is currently going through the details of his contract to join Liverpool.
“There was one condition: Schalke needed a replacement for him and we've just had confirmation that Shkodran Mustafi has terminated his contract at Arsenal.
“He's already agreed personal terms, so both deals can now go ahead.”
