Paul Merson in brutal Ralf Rangnick rant over lack of top-tier experience
Paul Merson has questioned Ralf Rangnick's impending appointment as Manchester United interim boss by pointing to his lack of experience at the top level.
Daily Star Sport understands United are on the verge of hiring Rangnick on a six-month contract following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last week.
The 63-year-old, best known for his work as a manager and sporting director at RB Leipzig, is expected to take the reins until the end of the season before transitioning into a different role next summer.
Many feel Rangnick, who is credited with inventing Gegenpressing, represents a solid appointment for the Red Devils until they can go after a new permanent gaffer in 2022.
But Merson isn't convinced, questioning why he has never before landed a job in England or at a top club in 38 years as a manager.
When asked why United are hiring an interim coach until the end of the season, the Arsenal legend said on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday: "Because they don't know what they're doing at the moment in my opinion.
"I think Ole would have been at the club still today if it probably wasn't for two goals in the last minute against Watford and I don't think there was any plan.

Ralf Rangnick could install 'countdown clock' to help Man Utd players learn tactics
"I just didn't think they thought in their wildest dreams that was [how it was] gonna end up at Watford.
"I think at 2-1, I personally think he's still in charge come Sunday, I really do. I think they were gonna keep it as long as they could and now they haven't.
"For me, to bring in a manager – and I know I'm hearing great words and hearing people going how great he is – he's never managed in England. he's never managed one of the top teams in the world. Why is that?
"That's what I want to know. Why has no one else come in for him when managers have been up? That's what I always look at.
"I hear great things about him and you're saying he's gonna press and he's hard-working, he's turned lesser teams into real, real contenders – that's a lot different.
"That's a lot different getting a Schalke or a Hoffenheim, someone like that and getting them to a certain stage.
"When you're asked to go to one of the biggest clubs in the world and they've already got superstars and you've got to make them play, it's alright at Schalke or Hoffenheim because they're gonna listen and they wanna get there, these players are there and you've got to get them to go again.
"I think this is going to be difficult, I think this is going to be a lot harder than people think. What I'm hearing it's like a give me, 'Oh he'll come in and that will be it, Man United are lucky.'

"I ain't sure about that. Man City was embarrassing, Liverpool was bad but it wasn't as bad as Man City, and then Watford was an absolute joke.
"At the end of the day, we can all say Solskjaer Solskjaer, but it's the players who cross the line, they've got to turn up and play the game.
"You could have Pep Guardiola on the bench sitting next to Arsene Wenger, [Jurgen] Klopp and [Thomas] Tuchel, if the players ain't running around it doesn't matter what you're doing on the bench."
