Oscar Pistorius’ surprise net worth ahead of swapping dingy jail for mansion

Oscar Pistorius will swap his dingy jail cell for a luxury multi-million pound mansion upon his release.

A private parole hearing on Friday at Atteridgeville prison in Pretoria, South Africa, set the ex-Olympian's release for 5 January 2024. It comes a decade after he was imprisoned for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The 37-year-old is expected to study to become a preacher, while Johannesburg police confirmed that criminals from the city’s underworld still want revenge for Reeva’s killing. He will do so by moving into a plush three-storey pad in Waterkloof owned by his uncle Arnold – his long-time advocate and a deeply religious Christian.

The home will be guarded by a security team. And any driver entering the street will be required to have their palm print scanned on a high-tech camera system at the roadblocks in order to identify themselves.

The six-time Paralympic gold medallist had become a spiritual guide to other convicts inside his jail block, encouraging them to read the bible. Pistorius was moved to Atteridgeville prison a year into his sentence due to his disability, while his first year was spent in a dingy cell at Kgosi Mampuru II maximum security prison.

Pictures of his cell show the grim and cramped conditions he faced, though ‘Blade Runner’ was given his own bathtub after complaining that he wanted one. It marked a huge change in lifestyle for the former icon, who was worth a staggering £4million at the time of his trial in 2013.

That was thanks to various endorsements and sponsorships from the likes of BT, Oakley, Thierry Mugler and Nike – who dropped him along with his advert, which featured the line: “I am the bullet in the chamber.”

Losing his sponsors hasn’t plunged Pistorius into financial difficulty, however, with various family businesses believed to still be contributing to his revenues, according to Forbes Africa. According to Celebrity Net Worth, the disgraced athlete has a net worth closer to $150,000 (£120,000) in November 2023.

Yet it was reported Pistorius struggled to pay his own legal defence fees as early as 2014, having shot Reeva in the early hours of the morning of Valentines Day a year earlier. He had claimed that he believed an intruder had entered his house, driving him to grab his gun before shooting through his locked bedroom toilet door.
