Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hails Paul Pogba after he sends Man Utd three points above Liverpool

Burnley v Man Utd: Match in pictures

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has sung the praises of Paul Pogba after the Frenchman was the match winner against Burnley on Tuesday. Pogba scored the only goal of the game at Turf Moor as United moved to the top of the Premier League table, three points clear of Liverpool. The Red Devils visit Anfield to play Jurgen Klopp’s side on Sunday.

Pogba was named man of the match by former United right-back Gary Neville.

The midfielder has constantly been linked with a move away from Old Trafford.

But Solskjaer says Pogba has always been a “big player” for the club and says the 27-year-old is now playing at his best.

“I’ve always said Paul is a big, big player for us, he’s a good character in the dressing room,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports.

“He’s always one that the lads look to, he’s a world champion of course.

“We’re seeing the best out of Pogba at the moment I feel, getting better and better for every game.

“He’s been injured and had COVID, it’s just natural that he needed some time to get fit.”

Pogba was delighted to have ground out the win in the way United did.

He told Sky Sports: “We know that the game today was very hard, very difficult and obviously we wanted to win.

“We know it’s not easy to play here. We got the three points and we’re happy for that but there’s still a long way and now we focus again until the end of the season.

“You can see that the game was going both ways, it’s very hard to play here.

“They have a style of play, very strong and we knew it would be difficult.

“We had to keep our heads calm and just focus on ourselves and hope the goal would come and it did come. It was a great performance from everyone, good focus.”

Solskjaer is excited ahead of Sunday’s clash with reigning champions Liverpool and says his players remain “hungry” to keep improving.

“A brilliant position to be in,” the Norwegian added.

“Of course, we know we’re going to the champions.

“They’ve had an unbelievable three-and-a-half seasons so we know it’s going to be a difficult game for us but we’re ready for it.

“I think we couldn’t have asked for a better time to play them because we’re in good shape, good form.

“Hungry, that’s the big thing. These boys are hungry, they want to get better and that’s a test, again. A test of character and test of quality.”
