Oldham become first ex-Prem club relegated into non-league after day of carnage

Oldham Athletic have finally had their future confirmed after a day of carnage that saw their game with Salford City abandoned before being restarted behind closed doors.

The former Premier League club are now the first club to be relegated from the English Football League after playing in the Premier League, once rubbing shoulders with the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool. The League Two side dropped out of the Premier League after just two seasons in the reformed top division in 1993/1994 season when they finished 21st in the table.

The day has proved to be a disaster as fans flooded the pitch at Boundary Park ten minutes before the end of their match against local rivals Salford City. Fans chanted “You useless b******s, get out of our club" and unveiled a banner that read "get out of our club" as John Sheridan approached the dozens of restless fans to plead with them to disperse and allow the match to get back underway.

The Latics fans resisted and continued to protest the ownership that has meant they have fallen down the football pyramid gradually, and now the worst result possible has come to fruition. The club has since been the subject of years of turmoil, with this season proving to be the killer that could send them out of the English Football League.

Fans were seen pouring onto the pitch during the match today as pressure grows on the owner of the club, Abdallah Lesmagam, to sell up. Pressure has steadily increased over the course of the season, with the owner confirming that the club was on the market in the new year. Despite the claims, he is still the owner of the relegated club and is yet to shift the former Premier League club on.

Fans were left furious when the match got back underway behind closed doors as stewards were seen boarding up the Roe Royle Suite where fans were following the match was initially suspended for around two hours. Fans made a point that the stewards in fact blocked the fire exit to make sure they couldn't watch their team get relegated in fear of more disruption.

Since the Morrocan football agent bought 97% of the club, Oldham have had 11 managers, with John Sheridan returning for his sixth stint in charge as the club plummeted down the leagues.
