Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo believes players must take the knee for longer than five seconds before matches next season when fans return to stadiums.

English football will boycott social media for a full weekend in their bid to stand against the vile racist abuse of footballers. The shutdown begins at 2pm on Friday and lasts until 10.59pm on Monday.

Nuno has strongly backed the taking of the knee ever since it was introduced when football returned after the coronavirus lockdown last June but he now believes the message needs to be stronger when supporters are in the grounds.

The Wolves manager believes the message needs to be stronger regarding racist abuse

‘We take the knee for about five seconds before the game starts, and I think it should be longer when the fans hopefully return to the stadium so we can pass on the right message,’ said Nuno, the only BAME manager in the top flight.

‘Hopefully we can make a stand and everyone will understand the message. When fans are in the stadium, they are part of the message. If someone doesn’t agree, let’s see how we deal with it.

‘I hope the response [from fans in the grounds] will be positive but also knowing it will take many years for racism to be fully eradicated.

‘We have to be patient, persistent and relentless in our message.’

Nuno has previously said that he would continue to take the knee even if he were the only person still to be doing so

The gesture has been largely supported throughout the campaign, though some players, such as Wilfred Zaha, no longer adopt it.

Nuno has previously said that he would continue to take the knee even if he were the only person still to be doing so.

A change would require the support of the playing community, rather than from the Premier League, and would likely have to be discussed among the top-flight captains before anything could be signed off.
