Nottingham Forest have agreed to sign Burnley goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey on a free transfer this summer.

The 35-year old Wales international will bring competition for Dean Henderson who joined on loan from Manchester United earlier this month.

Forest needed strengthening in that department after Brice Samba indicated he would not sign a new contract and left to join Lens.

Samba made his intentions to leave clear to Forest last month, before the club offered him a deal that did not meet the Congolese shot stoppers demands.

Suggestions are that Samba did not feel the proposed contract reflected his importance to the squad, or what he had achieved in three years with the side.

Therefore, Nottingham Forest decided to sign Hennessey – who was restricted to just two appearances at Turf Moor last season.

Hennessey played second fiddle to England keeper Nick Pope during the 2021-2022 season

Hennessey played second fiddle to Nick Pope during the 2021-2022 season and has been deemed as a surplus to the requirements despite the England goalkeeper’s departure.

Pope enjoyed six years at Turf Moor and established himself as a highly-rated shot stopper in the Premier League, but always looked likely to move on after the Clarets were relegated last season.

Therefore, he completed a £12million move to Newcastle United – penning a four-year-deal with the Premier League side.

As a result, Nottingham Forest manager Vincent Kompany will be looking to sign a new No 1 shot stopper ahead of the 2022-2023 campaign.

One of Kompany’s primary targets is Manchester City’s Kosovan goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.

The Burnley manager has opened talks with Muric – who spent last season out on loan in Turkey with Adana Demirspor.

Muric could be interested in the move considering he has only made four appearances for City despite joining the club in 2015.

Muric has, however, enjoyed successful loan spells at Nottingham Forest, Girona FC, Willem II Tilburg, and NAC Brada.
