Eddie Nketiah has identified Arsenal's forgotten man that could rival Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a sprint race.

Mikel Arteta has plenty of options going into next season as he looks to build his own squad.

Last summer, the Spaniard tried to bring in a number of players but missed out on several targets including Houssem Aouar and Phillipe Coutinho.

Nevertheless, plenty arrived such as Willian, Gabriel Magalhaes and Thomas Partey.

Arteta offloaded many of the top earners as well, including Mesut Ozil and Shkodran Mustafi as Granit Xhaka also prepares to leave.

And another facing the exit door is Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who has told Arsenal that he does not want a bit-part role anymore.

It comes after starring for West Brom on loan towards the end of last season.

One attribute the midfielder has that many might not know about is his blistering pace – something Arsenal striker Nketiah has remarked.

He even admitted that he would give Aubameyang, one of the fastest players at the Emirates, a run for his money.

“Yeah, I would say Auba, but usually Ainsley. He’s out on loan, but he’s up there as well I think. Auba vs Ainsley would be a good race I think,” Nketiah told the Sky Sports Football YouTube channel.

Whether Maitland-Niles is an Arsenal player for much longer remains to be seen.

The England international was less than pleased after missing out on the England squad ahead of the Euros this summer.

He is desperate to play in his preferred midfield role, rather than as a back-up full-back – which is where Arteta has largely used him.

But even with the Gunners looking for reinforcements in the position, it does not appear that Maitland-Niles will get his wish.

Arsenal are looking at Wolves star Ruben Neves and Brighton ace Yves Bissouma in the transfer window and the 23-year-old has been tipped as a potential swap option.
