Neymar has leaked his private WhatsApp exchanges with Brazil’s penalty villains Marquinhos and Rodrygo as well as defender Thiago Silva in an attempt to illustrate how united the group were during the World Cup in Qatar. Brazil suffered heartache last Friday as they were dumped out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage after being beaten by Croatia following a penalty shootout.

“I decided to expose these messages (without their permission) to show how much we wanted this title and how united we were,” the 30-year-old Paris Saint-Germain striker wrote on Instagram on Sunday. “These are some of the many messages I exchanged with the group.

“Feeling of great sadness, but we need to be stronger to move forward and I am sure that with the support of all the fans, we will come back stronger. I am Brazilian with great pride, with a lot of love. I am very proud to be part of this selection. I became a fan of all of them. This group will always be in my heart.”

In his message to PSG centre-back Marquinhos, who missed Brazil’s final spot kick, Neymar wrote: “A penalty will not change what I think of you.” The defender then replied: “I really wanted to do things right, f***. To think that this penalty is an obstacle in our dream. But let’s go, we have to be strong, give ourselves time and see what football still has in store for us.”

Neymar then told Silva he “really wanted to give this cup”, to which the Chelsea ace replied: “I can’t stand it. I can’t believe we lost. I can’t believe it. Every time I remember, it makes me want to cry.”

And Brazil’s joint-record goalscorer then sent a message to Rodrygo. The Real Madrid ace replied: “Thank you my idol. Sorry for everything and for postponing your dream too, I hope you will continue with us, to conquer together, of course if it’s best for you.”

And Neymar responded: “Why are you asking for forgiveness, are you crazy? Only those who hit fail and you are an ace. But then I teach you how to hit.”

Brazil have won a record five World Cups and were the favourites to lift the trophy once again in Qatar. The South Americans defeated Serbia and Switzerland in their first two group matches, before losing to Cameroon.

They sailed through their last-16 encounter by thrashing South Korea 4-1 but ultimately came to the end of the road after Croatia held their nerve in the shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
