Newcastle made a proposal including ‘impossible’ clauses for Reims striker Hugo Ekitike, the Ligue 1 club’s president has claimed. Jean-Pierre Caillot has revealed that one of the bonuses included in the £29million offer involved the relegation-threatened Magpies winning the Champions League.

Newcastle are expected to spend heavily in January to aid their battle against Premier League relegation. They have already spent around £40m on Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

The Tyneside outfit are in the unique position of potentially being able to spend their way to safety following October’s £305m takeover.

Caillot said: “They offered us €35million (£29m) in total but with many bonuses, some of which were almost impossible to achieve. Like winning the Champions League.”
