Newcastle urged to hire Roy Hodgson who “players would like” and ensure safety

Newcastle United have been urged to hire Roy Hodgson as their managerial replacement for Steve Bruce because the "players would like" him and he can ensure safety.

That is according to Danny Murphy, who made 105 appearances under Hodgson for Fulham across three seasons.

He has called for Hodgson to be appointed if the new owners of Newcastle choose to relieve Bruce of his duties, with the club second bottom of the Premier League and winless after eight matches.

Hodgson retired from management in June after four seasons in charge of Crystal Palace, but could now return to the Premier League.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday, Murphy said: “I know for sure the players would like him and be on board with him. You can’t not.

“He’s been there, done it, he took Palace from an impossible position, they were in a much worse position than Newcastle are by the way, and kept them up comfortably.

“He knows what he’s doing, he’s been in many relegation fights, time at Fulham, time at West Brom.

“Of course, with his age and what Newcastle want to do it is a short term thing but the other option is to try and go out and get the men you want to move the club forward and give them the project long term.

“But, which top manager is going to want to take that risk right now.

“People talk about Conte, who is a very capable manager but apparently he’s saying he’s not interested.

“The reason he’s not interested is because he doesn’t want to waste a year in the Championship.”

Newcastle had been linked with former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss Conte following the takeover, but the Italian has snubbed interest with his preference being a club already challenging for titles.

Other names linked with replacing Bruce include Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Paulo Fonseca.

Hodgson has pedigree when it comes to taking over sides at the wrong end of the table having worked wonders at both Fulham and Crystal Palace in the past.

In 2008, Fulham were on the verge of relegation at half-time in a match against Manchester City before coming back from two goals down to win and, ultimately, stay up.

Nine years later, he kept Palace in the top flight after the club had lost their opening seven matches without scoring a single goal as the Eagles ended the season 11th.
