Newcastle United will reportedly look to appoint Graeme Jones as their new manager if, as is widely expected, the club’s new owners decide to relieve Steve Bruce of his duties.
Bruce, 60, has been manager of Newcastle for two years now, but with just a 29.2 per cent win rate he has seen his popularity fall through the floor at St James’ Park.
Supporters of the north east club feel they deserve better after being dragged into the relegation end of the table for the majority of the decade.
And with just one top seven finish since 2006/07, there will be an expectation for the new owners to get rid of Bruce and appoint a top-class manager to gain European football once again.
Antonio Conte, Steven Gerrard and many others have been linked with the job should Bruce leave, with the budget given by the consortium likely to be enough to bring in a manager with title-winning pedigree.
But by sacking Bruce, the club will take their time to appoint a new manager worthy of the task.
And according to the Telegraph, this would mean that current assistant manager Jones would be the man to temporarily take the hot seat for the game against Tottenham.
“I want to continue,” Bruce said to the Daily Telegraph.
“I’d like the chance to show the new owners what I can do, but you have to be realistic and they may well want a new manager to launch things for them.
“New owners normally want a new manager. I’ve been around long enough to understand that.”
It would see Bruce leave his boyhood club after a two-year stint, but Bruce accepts that the decision is not in his hands.
“That decision is not up to me, I accept that and I will accept what comes my way.
“I have to wait to have those conversations with people when the time is right.
“If I don’t make it to a 1,000 games against Spurs, you might say that could only happen to me, but I don’t think it would be cruel. It’s just football.”
Bruce has managed 1,000 games in football, but it appears that will stop imminently.
