Newcastle are reportedly at the front of the queue to bring in esteemed director of football Luis Campos, who has long been linked with taking up the role at Manchester United. The Magpies are at the very start of a new chapter with the world’s richest owners in football aiming to push the club up the table.
Steve Bruce was swiftly fired with a host of managers being linked as his replacement.
Eddie Howe was eventually given the job after Unai Emery publicly turned down an approach from Newcastle.
The former Bournemouth boss will take charge of his first game as Newcastle manager this weekend against Brentford.
But there are still big moves to be made behind the scenes at Newcastle with multiple reports indicating that a director of football will be brought in before the January transfer window.
JUST IN: Newcastle’s huge transfer plan could damage Conte’s Tottenham overhaul
Marc Overmars had been the top target but the Ajax chief seems set to continue his impressive reign at the Dutch club after opting to stay put.
His decision has forced Newcastle chiefs to consider other options and one name at the top of their list is said to be Campos, who was once a target for United.
Campos has been out of work since leaving Lille in December 2020 after a change in ownership at the club.
His departure from the French side led to speculation linking him with a switch to Manchester United, who up to that point hadn’t hired anybody in the form of a sporting director.
DON’T MISS
The Red Devils had been on the lookout for a director of football dating back to 2018 and Campos’ name had continually been linked.
But United eventually opted to move in a different direction, with John Murtough being appointed as the club’s first football director in March earlier this year.
Campos earned a reputation as one of the best in the business during his time at both Monaco and Lille.
He helped oversee the transformation at Monaco which led to their unlikely Ligue 1 win in 2017.
And the Portuguese official also helped build Lille’s squad which saw them topple Paris Saint-Germain last season to win the title.
United may come to regret their decision though with Campos still available and seemingly keen on a switch to the Premier League.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, Campos has his eyes set on a switch to Newcastle.
It is claimed that Newcastle is Campos’ ‘real goal’ with the Magpies desperate to bring in an experienced director of football to oversee transfer operations.
They only have a few weeks until the January transfer window opens as well, giving them little time to put preparations together.
But judging on Campos’ performance at both Monaco and Lille, Newcastle would be bringing in one of the best in the business.
