Legendary MMA coach blasts Conor McGregor as “angry and jealous” of Poirier

Legendary MMA coach Firas Zahabi has labelled Conor McGregor “angry and jealous” of Dustin Poirier, a week after the Irishman’s devastating loss to the Diamond.

McGregor faced long-time rival Poirier in the main-event bout at UFC 264.

After a heated build-up to the trilogy contest, many fans were expecting the bout to be a potential fight of the year contender, with McGregor claiming he would make Poirier “pay with his life.”

Instead, Poirier dominated the opening round, landing the heavier shots on the feet as well as some brutal ground-and-pound after McGregor attempted an ill-fated submission. Two of the bouts’ judges scored the round 10-8 for the Diamond.

The contest would then go from bad to worse for the Irishman. In the final moments of the first round, McGregor fired a one-two combination. After missing with his left hand, he fell backwards, and his ankle appeared to snap.

The former UFC two-weight world champion collapsed on the canvas and Poirier jumped on top to land even more ground-and-pound.

The round ended just seconds after the injury and the UFC’s doctor told referee Herb Dean that McGregor was not fit to continue fighting, meaning Poirier was victorious via doctor’s stoppage.

Following the bout, McGregor was seething with the result and in his post-fight interview, even with a broken ankle, the former two-weight world champion offered some choice words for Poirier.

“This is not over,” the Irishman claimed.

“If I have to take this outside with him, it’s all outside. I don’t give a b******s.”

“Your wife is in my DMs. Hey baby. Hit me back up, I’ll chat to you later.”

Footage later released showed McGregor taking his threats one step further.

“In your sleep, you’re getting it. In your sleep, you’re dead. You and your Mrs. It ain’t over."

In the weeks following the bout, countless figures in the MMA community have condemned McGregor’s actions. One of the latest to do so is legendary MMA coach Firas Zahabi.

Zahabi is the former coach of UFC great Georges St-Pierre and has also trained MMA stars such as former Bellator champion Rory McDonald, Kevin Lee, and rising English featherweight Arnold Allen.

In a video posted on the Tristar Gym YouTube channel, Zahabi questioned how anyone could be a fan of McGregor after his outburst and labelled him “angry and jealous.”

“I was really grossed out,” Zahabi claimed.

“I don’t know how you guys can be fans of this man. I respect him as a fighter and I respect his skills, I can’t deny that. But the way he behaved at the press conference was just horrible.

“Whatever beef you have there, you can’t take it and start threatening to kill each other and then start threatening each other’s children, team members, and whatnot.

“That’s just animal behavior. Then to say what he said about Poirier’s wife. It’s disgusting.

“He’s so angry and jealous of Poirier. He will say and do anything to try and insult Poirier, to try and take away this moment off Poirier.

“Listen, Poirier has beaten you. He’s a better fighter than you and he will be remembered as a better fighter than you.”
