Newcastle suffer double setback in hunt of first marquee signing since takeover

Newcastle United have suffered their first major setbacks in the transfer market since the takeover from the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF).

The Magpies are under new ownership for the first time in 14 years after the PIF took the reins from Mike Ashley in a deal worth £300 million.

Having originally had a bid accepted by Ashley in April 2020, the Saudis had to wait 18 months to get the deal over the line.

The Premier League blocked the takeover initially due to the PIF failing the owner and directors test.

With huge financial backing, the new owners are hungry for success with frontwoman Amanda Staveley stating the long-term target is trophies.

But the Toon have already suffered a double transfer setback when trying to bolster their squad for an outside shot at Europe.

With seven games played, Newcastle sit 19th in the Premier League table and are winless all season-long.

Now any possible moves for January targets Aaron Ramsey and Mauro Icardi appear to be off the cards, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

"No approaches from Newcastle new board for Aaron Ramsey or Mauro Icardi as things stand now," tweeted the Italian reporter.

"Icardi is not planning to leave Paris Saint-Germain in the next few months.

"Ramsey will decide his future in December/January."

Hopes of Icardi heading for Tyneside seem over already, while Newcastle will want to plan ahead for January, and Ramsey keeping his options open does not help them.

The consortium will now have to move on to additional targets but they may wait until they know who is leading them forward.

It's evident that Steve Bruce's days on Tyneside are numbered with Frank Lampard, Brendan Rodgers and Graham Potter all linked with a move up north.
