Newcastle have started background negotiations with Kieran Trippier’s representatives over the potential signing of the England international, according to reports. The 31-year-old is now in his third season with the Spanish giants following his £20million move to the Wanda Metropolitano from Tottenham in the summer of 2019, as he approaches the final 18 months of his contract.

Trippier is said to be keen on a return to the Premier League for the final stretch of his career.

The former Spurs man was linked with Manchester United and Arsenal last summer but both clubs were hesitant to pay Atletico Madrid’s £30m asking price.

United wanted to bring in Trippier as competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, while his arrival would have also provided Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with an option at right-wing-back

But now it’s Newcastle who look most likely to snap up the Bury-born defender after opening talks with his representatives.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has heard from his contacts at Atletico that discussions are ongoing behind the scenes.

He said on Radio 5Live: “I hear from Atletico Madrid that Newcastle are really interested in getting Trippier and they have started negotiations with his people. I am not sure if they will get him or not.”

Newcastle are looking to add some star quality and additional experience in the January transfer window following their £305m Saudi takeover.
