Newcastle United are working on a deal for Wigan Athletic striker Kyle Joseph to snatch him out of the clutches of Celtic.

The highly rated 19-year old is out of contract in the summer and was poised to join Celtic after they held talks with his representatives in February.

However, Newcastle have now stepped in with a greater offer and are strong favourites to sign the Scotland U19 international.

League One strugglers Wigan would have been expecting compensation of around £230,000 from Celtic for a cross-border transfer of a player out of contract and under 24 but talks with Newcastle are understood to have gone well and the Premier League side are willing to pay around £850,000 to help push the deal their way.

Joseph scored five goals in 16 games this season before suffering a back injury that has ruled him out of a large part of Wigan’s run in and their battle to stay up.

His performances had attracted Rangers, as well as Celtic, plus Arsenal who had earmarked him for their U23 squad.

Newcastle though believe he has potential to push for their first team where they are light on competition for goal scorers.

Their transfer budget will be limited this summer but they are also pushing to sign Celtic centre back Kristoffer Ajer.

The Norway international wants to leave at the end of the season and has one year left on contract.

Newcastle are willing to offer around £10m but expect competition for the 22-year old’s signature.
