Newcastle hero Malcolm Macdonald has urged the club’s board to put aside their differences and appoint Frank Lampard as new manager. Members of the Magpies hierarchy are apparently at odds over who they should give the top job to following the sacking of Steve Bruce earlier this month.

Lampard has been taking a break from the limelight since being given his marching orders by Chelsea in January.

The 43-year-old spent a season-and-a-half as Blues boss but was relieved of his duties following a poor run of form around the festive period last season.

He has since reportedly been a target for Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Celtic, although he is still currently out of work.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have been linked to a whole host of star managers in recent weeks.

Lucien Favre, Roberto Martinez and Paulo Fonseca have emerged as the frontrunners to land the role – but Lampard is also in the running.

The former England midfield was unlucky to lose his job at Chelsea after helping the team to Champions League qualification in his first season at the helm, despite the fact he faced a transfer embargo when he was appointed.

Lampard can be credited with nurturing the likes of Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori at Stamford Bridge after also doing a stellar job during a year in charge of Derby County.

And Macdonald believes Lampard should be given a chance at St James’ Park.

“The man I would love to get the job is Frank Lampard,” Supermac wrote in The Chronicle.

“And if United fans want to know why, let them watch Chelsea carefully from three o’clock because they are the team that Frank built.

“He nurtured the players, brought through the kids like Mason Mount who he had first helped at Derby County, and set the pattern of play.

“He put in the foundations that produced Chelsea’s Champions League success last season and has propelled them to top of the Premier League this campaign.

“I want Newcastle to appoint a British manager rather than a foreigner, someone who understands the PL, knows all the players, and will sort out the ones he has here.

“Having met Amanda Staveley and other Newcastle directors at the last home match against Spurs I know at first hand how much ambition and desire to succeed abounds in the boardroom. We haven’t had that for 15 years and it gives me huge hope.

“I really do wish them well and I’m genuinely optimistic for the future. It is just the present I worry about.

“All the changes required cannot be achieved overnight and what we are now seeing in a desperate relegation fight is the legacy of Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce.

“United simply have to survive to give the new owners and new manager a chance to build the sort of future this wonderful club and its supporters deserve.”
