Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka ‘REJECTED a deadline day move to Manchester United’ as the Toon looked to secure Dean Henderson in exchange on loan until the end of the season

  • Newcastle were looking to sign Dean Henderson on loan until the end of the term
  • They offered Martin Dubravka in exchange to provide United with a backup
  • But the Slovakian rejected it as he did not want to play second to David De Gea
  • Henderson has also grown frustrated in his role as understudy to the Spaniard

Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka reportedly rejected a deadline day move to Manchester United on loan.

The Toon were looking to sign United’s Dean Henderson on loan until the end of the season and a potential deal could have seen Dubravka head the other way to Old Trafford.

The club were mindful of Ralf Rangnick’s need for a backup goalkeeper to David De Gea if they secured Henderson’s services for the rest of the season and offered Dubravka in a part-exchange.

But the 33-year-old rejected the proposed move, not wanting to play backup to the Spaniard, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Henderson wanted to leave Old Trafford for the same reason, having found himself deputy to De Gea this season.

The 24-year-old held talks with former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and has since spoken with interim manager Rangnick, but was told he was needed with the club still in the Champions League.

However, after making it clear he wanted a chance to play, Rangnick has relented and talks are underway over a loan deal.

The Magpies had a long-standing interest in the England stopper and were pushing ahead with a move.

The Slovakia international started for Eddie Howe’s side in their 3-1 win over Everton on Tuesday night, meanwhile Henderson only made his third appearance of the season in United’s FA Cup fourth round defeat to Middlesbrough.

But his performance in their penalty shootout left a lot to be desired, failing to save any of Boro’s eight spotkicks.

With the Red Devils now out of both domestic cups, Henderson could find his game time extremely limited.
