Newcastle eye Ter Stegen, takeover scuppered £40m Southampton swoop, Ruiz blow

Newcastle United are ready to tempt Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen with a "very lucrative offer", it has been claimed.

The Magpies were linked with signing a new 'keeper during the January transfer window with Arsenal's Bernd Leno and Manchester United's Dean Henderson rumoured to have been the subjects of admiring glances from St James' Park.

But any move failed to materialse, meaning Martin Dúbravka will see out the season as the club's No.1.

In a busy winter window, Eddie Howe's side were, simply put, linked with an awful lot of players.

One of those was Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu, with details on why his move to Newcastle now coming to light.

And after having a bid for Fabian Ruiz turned down by Napoli the club will continue their push for the midfielder in the summer – but will reportedly face competition for his signature.

Daily Star Sport has taken a look at the latest Newcastle United transfer news below.

Ter Stegen eyed

Newcastle are preparing a "very lucrative offer" for Barcelona's Marc-André ter Stegen, it has been reported.

According to Spanish news outlet El Nacional, the goalkeeper has become unhappy at Barca and "could leave to try his luck in the Premier League".

The player reportedly has a £67million release clause written into his contract which newly-rich Newcastle could "pay without too much trouble", the report adds.

Barcelona will consider carefully whether to sell the player, as they could use the money to move for Erling Haaland, it is added.

Why Salisu move failed

Newcastle United were all set to purchase Southampton's Mohammed Salisu in January before the club's takeover went through, according to reports.

90min reports the Magpies were set to bring in the centre-back for £40million in the opening week of the window before Serbian billionaire Dragan Solak bought the club and blocked the move.

Newcastle then moved on to other targets but ultimately failed in attempts to bring in Lille's Sven Botman and Sevilla's Diego Carlos before signing Brighton's Dan Burn in a £13m deal on deadline day.
