New Footsie Index – plus Kelty Hearts star Joe Cardle on driving a £1.2m Bentley
Welcome to another edition of The Engine Room with Adam Miller from the Old Firm Facts podcast.
As always, we've got the latest Footsie Index revealing the best and the worst in Scottish football this week.
And we've caught up with Kelty Hearts star Joe Cardle to quiz him about everything cars. Buying a car? Don’t just nail it, cinch it cinch.co.uk
Now let's kick off the Footsie Index…
SI Ferry
Having recently hosted a sold-out show at Glasgow’s Hydro with his Open Goal Scottish football podcast, it’s fair to say Si Ferry has been drowning in compliments of late. To that collection of kind words, the 33-year-old can now add: “Organiser and voice in the team. Will try to bully opponents by being loud. Will always sit and protect centre-halves. Will play short, side-to-side. Effective at picking up second balls.” Someone’s clearly been doing their homework on the Peterhead midfielder…
Falkirk FC
… and that “someone” is Falkirk FC. After their fan Q&A descended into a farce in which supporters were asked to stop booing their players, the club needed a few days without any own goals. While Falkirk were drawing 0-0 with Peterhead on the road, their stadium hosted East Stirlingshire vs Bonnyrigg Rose. And what did one lucky Bonnyrigg fan find under his seat? A full scouting report on Peterhead.
“Falkirk Football Club“ was filmed in front of a live studio audience.
Every football fan can recall those magical moments when their team carved out a result despite being reduced to 10 men. The resilience, the drama, the pride… Now imagine your team doing that with just EIGHT of their players on the pitch. Shortly after Airdrieonians went 2-1 up in the final minute of their League One home match against Dumbarton, the visitors received their third red card. And then, in the FOURTH minute of injury time, Dumbarton made it 2-2. What a result…
Dumbarton FC
That is, what a result it would have been had the score remained two apiece. The old boys on the supporters’ bus 25 years from now would have asked: “Where were you that night at the Excelsior Stadium when we scored a 94th-minute equaliser against a team with three more players than us?” They would have asked that, had Airdrieonians not scored in the 96th minute to seal a 3-2 win. Still, what a result it was for two minutes.
Joe Cardle in the driving seat
What was your first car?
A two-tone Ford Mondeo – not the standard first car. It was that old it had a tape player.
What do you drive now?
I now drive a Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian pickup. It’s great for my football academy and holds all my football equipment.
What’s been your best-ever driving experience?
Driving a friend’s vintage Bentley in the summer at Skibo Castle. I was with my fiancée Lucy and we drove incredibly slowly as the vehicle is worth over £1.2million.
Do you have a favourite road?
Driving to Gleneagles with my family is always special. The views on the road up are beautiful.
Who would be your dream passenger?
Has to be Jay Z. I’m a massive fan of his and would love to share a car with him.
If you were a car, what would you be?
Aston Martin Vantage: small, fast and classy.
Scottish football glossary: ‘Angeism’
In a previous edition of this glossary we looked at “Boyding”, which is a visual form of communication associated with Rangers legend Kris Boyd. On the other side of the divide is the “Angeism”, popularised by Celtic manager and non-sufferer of fools Ange Postecoglou.
So, how do you go about creating your own Angeism? The ingredients are simple. All you need is a journalist, a question, a withering reply and the word “mate”.
On Carl Starfelt’s injury prognosis earlier this season, Postecoglou replied, “I’m not a doctor, mate”.
When asked about the club’s finances, he explained: “I’m not an accountant, mate.”
But arguably the Australian’s finest work to date came this month when he was asked whether he would ever abandon his attacking approach – to which he responded, “If you are a strict vegetarian, you don’t drop into Macca’s just because you’re hungry, mate.”
What will the next Angeism be? I’m not a fortune-teller, mate.
