Neville talks interim Dragons Den job – fans hope it goes ‘better than Valencia’

Gary Neville has announced he's joining Dragon's Den and football fans are all making the same joke.

The Manchester United legend, who has built a thriving business portfolio since hanging up his boots, revealed on X that he's joining the smash-hit BBC show on an "interim" basis following weeks of speculation. In a tongue-in-cheek video, Neville treated confirmation of his seat in the Den like a football announcement video, and snuck in a savage Jamie Carragher-related jibe to boot.

"I'm absolutely delighted to join Dragon's Den, even if it is only for a very short period, on an interim contract," he said. "I had so many options on the table. I had offers from the US, I had offers from Asia. But I decided to stay at home, where my roots are and sign."

He jokingly compared walking out of the show's famous lift to walking out onto the pitch at Old Trafford, adding: "Those lift doors are more famous than the Wembley tunnel."

He continued: "This team that I'm joining has absolutely massive capabilities. Entrepreneurial skills, the flash centre forward, you can guess who that is… to work alongside people who've got a little bit of intelligence will be a new thing for me. Sorry Carra."

The episodes have already been filmed, with Neville earning rave reviews from fellow dragon Deborah Meaden, who said the former footballer "owned the chair". But fans on social media weren't so optimistic, with several admitting they were expecting a Valencia-style disasterclass.

"Hope it goes better than Valencia, Gary," one X user wrote. "Stick to punditry Gary. We all know how your last venture away from it went #Valencia," said another, while a third joked: "Worst appointment since Valencia hired him as manager."

The ex-England international, 48, had a brief, woeful spell in charge of La Liga side Valencia during the 2015/16 season. He lasted just under four months in the hotseat and was axed with the team 14th in the table, only six points clear of the relegation zone, after winning just three of his 16 league games.
