Neville feels Rangnick chose Man Utd’s Chelsea XI – and hints Carrick lied

Gary Neville feels that Ralf Rangnick may have chosen Manchester United's starting line-up for their trip to Chelsea and has hinted that Michael Carrick lied about picking it.

Sunday's match will likely be Carrick's final game as caretaker boss, with Rangnick expected to be officially announced as interim manager before Thursday's match with Arsenal.

The Chelsea match is the club's first since agreeing terms with Rangnick for a contract that will see him take charge of United for the remainder of the season.

However, the German was not in attendance at Stamford Bridge due to Visa issues which have delayed his arrival in England.

Neville took to Twitter ahead of the match to suggest that Rangnick had still been involved in the team selection despite not being present at the match.

Many fans had been surprised to see Cristiano Ronaldo starting on the bench, the first time he has not started a league match since returning to United in August.

He tweeted: “A lot of people having a go at Michael Carrick for dropping Ronaldo and picking that MDF.

"I’ve a feeling the incoming manager has picked that team as it’s a huge departure from midweek and what they’ve been doing.”

However, one fan quickly replied to Neville's tweet and wrote: “Carrick literally said he picked the team.”

Neville then implied that he felt Carrick may not have been telling the truth when he said he had picked the team as he responded: “I said I was full of confidence at Valencia in the last month as manager!”

The former United defender spent three months in charge of Spanish side Valencia between December 2015 and March 2016, winning just one of his final five matches as boss.

For their trip to Chelsea, United switched from the 4-2-3-1 formation they played in midweek to a 4-3-1-2 structure as Eric Bailly came in for the suspended Harry Maguire.

The other three changes saw Ronaldo, Donny Van de Beek and Martial drop out as Nemanja Matic, Bruno Fernandes Marcus Rashford came into the side.
