Neville calls Man Utd ‘graveyard for players’ in astonishing attack on old club

Gary Neville launched a staggering attack on Manchester United following their dismal derby day defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, calling them "a graveyard for players".

The Sky Sports pundit went on an impassioned rant claiming the "toxicity" around his old club makes it impossible for players and managers to flourish. He also said the saga surrounding Sir Jim Ratcliffe's imminent arrival wasn't helping, insisting the uncertainty of the situation was filtering down through the club.

"I honestly believe this toxicity that's existed at this club, and has done for years by the way, it just eats alive every manager that comes and every player that comes," Neville said. "Harry Maguire was going to go to Manchester City. Mason Mount was going to go to Liverpool. They come here and it's a graveyard for them.

"Are we going to keep blaming the kids in the class [the players] or are we going to blame the head teacher [the owners]? We've seen great managers with great reputations and great players with great reputations come here and just die in front of our eyes. Why is that?"

Jamie Carragher hit back at his colleague, insisting that some of the blame had to be pointed at Erik ten Hag and his squad. "So we can't analyse anything Erik ten Hag does or any performance Manchester United [produce]?" he asked Neville. "What they're doing on the training pitch Monday to Friday has got nothing to do with Jim Ratcliffe coming in.

"When they're building up from the back what are Manchester United trying to do with the ball? They're playing underdog football and have done since [Ten Hag] came in," the Liverpool legend added. "They play counter attacking football and they play long balls … that's got nothing to do with what's going on above him."

United were smashed 3-0 at Old Trafford by a City side who really ought to have scored more. Erling Haaland opened the scoring from the penalty spot mid-way through the first half after United summer signing Rasmus Hojlund pulled Rodri down in the box.

Haaland added a second just after the break, guiding a header past Andre Onana at the back post, while Phil Foden completed the rout on 80 minutes, stabbing home a Haaland cross from close-range. The win moves Pep Guardiola's side back to within two points of league-leaders Tottenham. United, meanwhile, are down in eight place after losing their fifth league match of the season, and their seventh in all competitions.
