Neville and Souness’ row over ‘nonsense’ comments leaves Keane wincing in corner

Gary Neville blasted Graeme Souness' "nonsense" claims over Manchester United as the pair were embroiled in a passionate exchange leaving Roy Keane unusually quiet in the corner of the Sky Sports studio.

The two pundits had a heated back-and-forth after United were ripped apart by Liverpool in a 7-0 humiliation at Old Trafford to end their slim hopes of challenging for the Premier League title. But while Neville was adamant the result was just a "freak" outcome, Souness disagreed as he pointed to United's other heavy defeats this season and would not back down.

"I don't think they've been convincing. They weren't against West Ham in midweek or in the [Carabao] cup final – I think they've been getting away with it," Souness began.

"That's a nonsense, Graeme," Neville immediately hit back.

Souness replied: "That's my opinion. Your opinion is that Liverpool didn't play well today."

"They beat Barcelona who are top of the Spanish league and beat them really well over two games," Neville said. "They're playing every three days, they've performed every three days, even the game they lost at Arsenal they played well. I watch Manchester United a lot more than you do and that's a nonsense."

Souness: "And I saw Arsenal go to Old Trafford and they should have beaten United. This is the worst possible result for Man Utd, more than just a punch on the nose for them."

Neville: "The reason it's a freak is because it's not happened for 80-100 years."

Souness: "What freak result?! You've lost [by] six already. Is that a freak as well?"

Neville pointed out the United side he played in – who later went on to win the title – lost two matches by 5-0 and 6-3 in the space of a week. Souness interjected: "We [Liverpool] lost once a year to top teams, they [United] have lost [by] six, four, they've been embarrassed again today. It's a recurring situation with this group of players."

Despite his view, Neville conceded: "I think this is a disgraceful result, but it's been out of character for this group and this manager over these last few months."

Souness questioned if the other sides had been "lucky" to beat United so convincingly, as Keane then made his only remark in the whole exchange to state, unlike the United team he and Neville played in, that this crop would not be winning the title.

"No they won't win the league, he needs another couple of transfer windows, Erik ten Hag," Neville admitted. "What he's getting out of these players, we'd written half this team off in the last two years: Rashford, Dalot, Wan-Bissaka, Shaw, Varane, Fred, McTominay – they're all still playing though those players and he's achieving unbelievable things with them, so I've got faith in what he's doing in this moment in time.

"He deserves a little bit more back from the players that what he's got today, but that second half is out of character for what we've seen in the last few months. They've lost one game in 25 or something. That's not the norm for those players in the last two or three months. They've improved enormously."
